While listening to a CD of South African Soweto music, I came across a song entitled, ‘The Man in Black’. It says,
I’m being harassed by the man in the black coat,
Every pay day I find him waiting for me outside the gate,
He demands all my money even when I hide it.
In the background of the song is the repetition of a call for money.
It occurs to me that money can be great as a servant but terrible as a master. Jesus said, ‘You cannot serve God and money.’ In fact, if we are obsessed with materialism we can’t even effectively serve and love one another.
Let me as a question in the words of an early 70s song by Graham Nash,
Is the money you make
Worth the price that you pay
When you hang out your soul on the line.
Live for what really matters.
